Westland Whirlwind, 137 Sqn, 1942, the pilot is Dattatreya Samant who was originally IAF and then transferred to the RAF and flew one or two tours over Europe.

F/O Derek H Ward was taken on strength by No 87 Squadron RAF after he had ferried a badly damaged Hurricane Mk I from France to RAF Debden on 20 May 1940. On 11 August, the 23-year-old New Zealander was appointed B flight commander, claiming an Me 110 destroyed 4 days later. From September, A and B flights alternated at RAF Bibury on night duties, and on 3 days into the month Ward damaged an enemy aircraft at night.
