A winter art activity using the book Snowmen at Night provides a pleasing art project for children using pastels and shading.

In First Grade, we read the book Snowmen at Night and Snowmen at Work. We used our imagination and talked about what our snowmen might be doing at night when we are sleeping and students created their own version using chalk pastel and oil pastel. We also talked about value and shadow. With the moon shining on one side, we noticed a shadow on the other side. We used cool colors to draw a shadow with the chalk pastel. After, we added some "snowflakes" using glitter paper and glue.
