the wall is decorated with many different colored squares and circles, which have been drawn on it

Last year for my day 1 lesson I read and did "the Dot." Each student created their own dot, and I had two marvelous parent volunteers that helped hang it for me. Here's a glimpse of what that looked like... This year I decided to read "Only One You" by Linda Kranz. It's a great day one story and I love any book that encourages students to embrace what makes them unique. Here is the cover of the book. I think it's also worth the mention that Kranz also recently came out with another book…

an image of a cat made out of many different colored flowers and butterflies on a wall

So one day before the art show, we managed to pull together and pull off one of our biggest collaboratives to date: our Legacy Mosaic Mural! This big honkin' mama-jama was created by my first thru third grade students. I knew that my kindergarten and fourths would need two weeks for their clay projects...and that my other kiddos would only need one. a table topped with lots of colorful kites next to a sign that says village of kindness

So, just what does every art teacher on the planet think of on his/her last days of art teacherin'? What they plan on teaching next school year, that's what! For the next couple of weeks, I'm going to be sharing with you some of my favorite (and simple!) school-wide collaborative projects. These are easy and fun ways to unite your young artists as well as shine a spotlight on your program from the start of the new school year. I'll also be speaking on this topic at this summer's AOE online…

an art project made out of paper strips with words written on it and colorful colors

Each of my elementary students (that I see twice each week) painted a strip of paper with warm colors. They decided on the pattern & colors. I love this fun, summer-on-the-horizon collaborative project!

there are so many students represented in this art project that they will be able to do

This project is perhaps the perfect “All About Me” activity. Not only do the kids have to write about themselves, but then all the individual works are combined to make up the “connected” class community. In this way, it connects the individual with the group. It uses my specifically designed tessellation pieces, and it has a ton of “wow factor” when complete. It’s fun for kids and easy for you as the teacher. I’ve done everything I can do to make this a successful project.
