The giant phantom jelly was filmed by the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute at a depth of 3,200 feet.

“Today’s obscure animal of the day is the Giant Phantom jellyfish! These deep sea jellies are extremely elusive, with only about 100 sightings since their discovery in 1899! They measure in at about three feet wide, and their tentacles can be up to 33 feet long!”

(@mbari_news) on Instagram: “This spectacular jellyfish, Stygiomedusa gigantea, is one of the largest invertebrate predators known in the ocean, yet little is understood about its ecology and behavior. It was first collected more than 100 years ago, but since then sightings have been recorded for just over 100 individuals. It has four curtain-like oral arms that can reach over ten meters long and the swimming bell of this medusa can reach over one meter across."⠀

They are rare! But However, they did not realize they had stumbled upon the extremely rare, giant phantom jellyfish (Stygiomedusa gigantea). Until then, there had been only 126 recorded observations of the species since its identification in 1910.
