New York City apartments can be notoriously small — like 55 square feet small. One place where it’s easy to feel the lack of square footage in a tiny apartment is the kitchen, but fear not: There are plenty of small-space tips and tools specifically for kitchens. If you’re like Aleena Cherian (@artbyalchemy) and her husband, Jebin, and you own your apartment (or have a permissive landlord), a little DIY can do wonders.

Josh and I found our SubZero refrigerator on Craigslist (our ever-resourceful friend Marc Agger, Francesca’s husband, arranged transport to Brooklyn from the Upper West Side). I bought our Frisbee Trash Bin, designed by French industrial designer Frédéric Perigot, at ABC Home (it’s also available from Luminaire). The small oil painting of Rome rooftops is by the late Provincetown/NY painter Arthur Cohen.

Buying an affordable apartment in New York City can be next to impossible. Seriously, we’ve done our research. But when you find a diamond in the real estate rough, you go for it and figure out a way to make it work.
