These pearls were originally strung in a necklace that belonged to Marie Antoinette. The French Queen’s jewels were given to her daughter, Marie Thérèse, Madame Royale, by her cousin, Franz II of Austria (1768-1835) when the young princess, 15 years old, was freed from prison and fled to Vienna. When she died in 1860 in Austria, the pearls were given to her niece, Louise, Duchess of Parma. The duchess can be seen wearing the original necklace in a painting by Prosper Raffi.
