It is important to explicitly tell the students WHAT they will be learning, HOW they will be successful in mastering that skill and WHY it is an important skill to learn. This is where learning targets and success criteria come in to play.

Learning targets are an efficient visual to help your students meet their daily learning targets, learning intentions or objectives in any subject area. They can be displayed as a sign on a bulletin board or anywhere else in your classroom. They are also easy to shrink and print for individual student use. I had the opportunity to visit another school yesterday to be a part of their site review team. It was an incredible experience and something I wish teachers had the opportunity to do more. Posting learning targets is a critical way to keep students accountable and aware of what they are learning. Just print, laminate and hang! Each day I use a vis a vis marker to write on the posters and I use a wet paper towel to wipe off the learning target at the end of the day. You can't get much easier than that!
