Felted wool blanket

Someone emailed me recently and asked me to explain how I made the felted sweater blanket I have posted on my projects page. I found some old pictures on my laptop and put this post together.

Sewing with felted wool in November and December was all about Christmas gifts and keeping warm. I find the process of cutting, washing, drying, stacking, and organizing wool very satisfying. I wash each sweater in a separate pillowcase, to keep fibers from mixing, and so enjoy the anticipation of opening each pillowcase to see just how a particular sweater felted. My finished prefelts are blowing in the wind. I'll use them to enhance felted garments. I'll cut them up and use them both under and on top of my silk fabrics or even directly on the wool roving. We had another felting party today. The photo above is from October's felting party and Paula was making a scarf with pencil roving and winding it around the bubble wrap. She said it took her between 6-8 hours to lay out. She then covered the pencil roving and bubble wrap with plastic and rolled it. Since it was so long, she could only roll one half of it at a time.
