Third grade used warm and cool colors and pattern to create these tempera paintings. The students viewed artwork by native people and how their hand print was not only a record of who they were or where they had traveled, but also a way to sign their art. The students each used their hand prints to sign their paintings. Notice how the warm colors (red, orange, and yellow) advance and the cool colors (blue, green, and violet) recede? I hear lot of questions about how to teach Elements of Art. Although it does seems like you can incorporate the Elements of Art into almost any lesson, it is nice to lay a foundation and teach the importance of the Elements of Art. When doing this I want my students to be able to recall all of the Elements of Art and understand why they are the building blocks to creating all art, so I came up with a few different ways to teach Elements of Art as a lesson or unit.

Learn about the art element of color as you create your own monochromatic watercolor art. You’ll also get to explore Picasso and his experiments with color.

4th Grade Shaded Forms 4th grade has been learning about the elements of art, FORM & VALUE. Form is a three-dimensional geometrical figure (like a sphere, cube, cylinder, cone, etc.), as opposed to a shape, which is two-dimensional, or flat. Value is the lightness or darkness of a color.
