Last week was the first class of my winter term “ Still Life with Oils - Master Copy Class” , taught online through the Art League of Alexandria. This term the master copy we are focusing on is a Dutch Golden Age Still Life by Willem van Aelst “Flower Still Life with a Watch, 1663”.

I feel that these bouquets weren’t a reflection of reality, flowers don’t rest like that. I’m sure there has been some rigging applied by the artists involved. But I like the balance of the bouquet and the vase here. The vase feels as part of it.

Jan Davidsz. de Heem was born in Utrecht in the Netherlands in 1606. His early style is reminiscent of Balthasar van der Ast, who may have been his teacher. In 1625, de Heem moved to Leiden, moving again in the 1630s to Antwerp. He spent lengthy periods in Utrecht, and was a member of the Utrecht guild between 1669 and 1672.

Here is my website Kevin Best Still Life Photographer The chinese bowls in these works are known as Kraak Porcelain it was produced from the Wanli reign (1563-1620) until around 1640. the name came from the Portuguese ships Carracks, which transported them. I marvel when I think of what these wafer thin delicate little objects have been though and survived.
