Jan Davidsz. de Heem was born in Utrecht in the Netherlands in 1606. His early style is reminiscent of Balthasar van der Ast, who may have been his teacher. In 1625, de Heem moved to Leiden, moving again in the 1630s to Antwerp. He spent lengthy periods in Utrecht, and was a member of the Utrecht guild between 1669 and 1672.

I marvel when I think of what these wafer thin delicate little objects have been though and survived.

Still Life with Goblet and Fruit, Jan Jansz. van de Velde, Dutch, 1656.   I've been researching a similar Roemer in the Chrysler's collection this week. This green-tinted glass was once very popular throughout Europe for drinking white wine.  Interestingly, in this painting, the decorative raspberry prunts on the roemer's stem are echoed in the berries in the bowl.
