Matrix and Purigen: You can replace your dirty filter cartridges yourself! A filter is simple; it has layers, and water is pushed through those layers. Usually you put a sponge in first (to get big stuff), then bio media to grow bacteria (Matrix), then Purigen or carbon (some people leave this out) to clear water. Stack these up in a way that works with your own filter. Replace the Purigen/carbon as needed, reuse Matrix and sponges (squeeze and swish them around in the dirty tank water).
