The first six months after the death of a husband was known as “heavy mourning.” The widow was required by society to wear only dresses made entirely of a dull crepe cloth or Henrietta cloth covered entirely with black crepe and secured with mourning pins. The dye used to make the crepe black was especially caustic smelling and easily rubbed off on the skin. Etiquette required the face to be covered completely by the veil when in public.
