Civilian conservation corps

In the 1930s the CCC employed millions of young men. They planted a billion trees, fought wildfires, restored cropland, and were on the scene following hurricanes and floods.

Part US Army, part Boy Scouts, part park ranger, the Civilian Conservation Corps was a New Deal program that deserves another look.

CCC: The Civilian Conservation Corps, otherwise known as the CCC, was another part of the the New Deal. This was where young people would revitalize parks and spaces.

The history of the CCC in Colorado has a very personal feeling for me because it was in Colorado that my grandfather worked as a U.S. Forest Service foreman for the CCC at places like Waunita Hot Spring, Norwood, Delta, Gardner, Idaho Springs, San Isabel and Monument. It was an interest in learning more about grandpa’s work that led me to an interest in the larger history of the CCC.
