Grimpoteuthis sp. “Dumbo Octopus”

This flapjack octopus is so cute that it might officially be named “adorabilis.” Specimens of this unnamed octopus have been collected since 1990; now Stephanie Bush, a postdoctoral researcher at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute in California, said that she is considering the scientific name Opisthoteuthis Adorabilis.

This beautiful octopus (Graneledone boreopacifica) was observed by ROPOS during cable route surveys between Endeavour Node and the north Regional Circulation Mooring (RCM) instrument platform at Endeavour Ridge, 20 September 2010. (N47° 58.1264′ W129° 2.8567′, depth: 2327m )

During recent dives off the California coast, the team of E/V Nautilus spotted several adorable Dumbo Octopuses. Here are a few of the best moments from those encounters.

The most adorable little octopus in the world looks like a cross between a Pac-Man ghost and a Pokemon creature. Just don’t ask for its name because it doesn’t have one yet. But the octopus is so cute...

Cute octopus, Opistoteuthis adorabilis Dr. Stephanie Bush, a researcher at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute(MBARI), is tasked with giving the orange ‘pus it’s official name. Some distinct morphological characteristics - huge eyes; allowing them to see (barely) in the murky darkness, dumbo-like “ears” which they use to swim around, and “well-developed” web between their eight arms, allowing them to “parachute” around the ocean floor.
