During the Battle of New Market in 1864 — VMI cadets played a major role, forcing Union General Franz Sigel out of the Shenandoah Valley.

Confederate Lieutenant - Captain Charles W. Fry, Orange Artillery ANV. Fry wore this uniform while commanding a battery at White Oak Swamp until late 1862 when he was promoted to Captain. It was at Oak Hill near Gettysburg on July 1, 1863 that Fry earned his place in history commanding the batt. which fired on the Union XI Corps west of Gettysburg.
