The first settlers of Market Drayton, Shropshire built their church around the year 950AD. The ‘dray’ in the town’s name is related to the Saxon word ‘drag’ & suggests it was known as a place where boats had to be dragged over an obstruction or carts dragged up a hill. Residents from a wide area walked to St. Mary's Church on Sundays and did bartering in the shadow of the church, leading to Drayton's identity as a market town.
