US Marine Harrier in Hong Kong harbour. I grew up in Hong Kong and love Harriers, so this photo really appeals to me. My dad used to take me down to see the enormous US warships when they docked.
1851 - Alston Arches Viaduct, Northumberland, England, UK
Alston Arches Viaduct is a stone bridge across the River South Tyne at Haltwhistle in Northumberland, England. The bridge, which has four stone arches, was designed by Sir George Barclay Bruce as a railway bridge. It formed part of the Alston Line and was completed in 1851. The railway closed in 1976 and the bridge was re-opened for pedestrian use in 2006.
1848 - Starrucca Viaduct, Pennsylvania, USA
Starrucca Viaduct is a stone arch bridge, 320m long, spanning Starrucca Creek near Lanesboro, Pennsylvania, in the USA. Completed in 1848, it was at the time the world's largest stone railway viaduct. It was designed by Julius W. Adams and James P. Kirkwood and built of locally quarried random ashlar bluestone, except for three brick interior longitudinal spandrel walls and the concrete base of the piers. The bridge has been in continual use for more than a century and a half.
