Murasaki Shikibu (c. 973 - c. 1014 or 1025). Learned, erudite, and a keen observer of human nature, this poet and lady-in-waiting penned what is commonly considered the world's first novel in 11th century Japan. During her life, she and many other female Heian writers--some of them her rivals--were instrumental in the development of Japanese as a written language, and her work has remained influential since.
