We tried loads of photographic approaches for this cover before arriving at this. I created this illustration as a last-minute entry to the Cover Meeting, and amazingly it ended up being the finished jacket. Here's the finished cover, plus a close-up of the illustration.

Shunga (春画?) is a Japanese term for erotic art. Most shunga are a type of ukiyo-e, usually executed in woodblock print format. The ukiyo-e movement as a whole sought to express an idealisation of contemporary urban life and appeal to the new chōnin class. The style reached its apex in the Edo period (1603 to 1867).
