Crate Table by Gerrit Rietveld for Cassina, 1980s
Low crate table 1 designed by Gerrit Thomas Rietveld in 1934 and made by Cassina in the eighties. Marked and numbered: Cassina, Meubelmakerij Rietveld, Adriaan van Ostadelaan 25, no. 40 (low number!). In 1934, Rietveld started experimenting with furniture made from wood that was used to make crates. Rietveld reasoned that furniture for transport was always packed in crates, which apparently consisted of stronger material than the furniture itself. So why not use that material to make a piece of
